Ultrasound Scans
Ultrasound
Our ultrasound machine is one of the most used pieces of equipment in the building. We have a range of probes, each of which allows us to look at different type of tissue at a different depth within the body.
An ultrasound scan is a non-invasive way to look inside of your pet at their organs, such as the heart, the bladder, the kidneys and the bowels. It gives a moving, real time image of what is happening inside. An ultrasound scan of your pet will give our doctors a huge amount of information.
We use ultrasound examinations to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of many conditions.
It is a vital piece of equipment for our emergency doctors, a FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) can be performed after a trauma or in acute case to check for obvious signs of damage, internal bleeding etc. These things are often not detected on an X-ray.
We can also use the ultrasound machine for specific tasks such as heart scans and pregnancy scan.
Should we need to take a biopsy sample of an internal organ it is often possible to use the ultra sound image to guide us without the need for surgery. Urine samples can be taken from the bladder in the same way.
Your veterinarian may refer your pet to us for our specialist to perform an ultrasound scan as part of their diagnostic work-up on your pet.
