Meet Tinkerbell a nearly 6 yr old blind Domestic Cat

I’ve been blind since kitten so I know my way around, but mommy is very paranoid when it comes to the outdoors, so myself and my siblings are strictly indoor cats, meaning that my days are mostly filled with lazing around on any sunny spot I can find in the house.

So yesterday while mommy went to work, I explored the house like so many times before and you won’t believe what I found. Up high on one of the kitchen shelves there was a creature lurking.  At first the creature did not move, but I could smell he was there, unlike my siblings who did not even notice him.  I took it upon myself to rid our home from lurking creatures and I skilfully climbed the kitchen counter, manoeuvring my way to within inches of him.  I obviously outsmarted the creature as it did not see me coming.

I pawed at it, then whacked it hard.  I knew that it was flying through the air as I heard the sound it made when it hit the floor.   I jumped off the counter and found the creature lying on the floor.   It was frozen still, probably trying to play dead.  As I was leaning in to go for the kill my siblings rushed over and told me to show mercy.

I considered this for a moment and then decided that this will be my gift to mommy.   I gave the creature one bite and suddenly all the stuffing came out.   The kitchen floor erupted with the smell of catnip and I felt like I was in heaven.

I gulped down as much catnip as I could before my siblings noticed what was going on.  If there is one thing I don’t do, its share catnip.    After I ate all the catnip filled stuffing, I played around with the empty casing of the catnip toy until all of a sudden, I wasn’t feeling that well.  Maybe I needed to lie down for a while so I headed over to mommy’s bed.

As I jumped onto the bed, I felt sick and left mommy some random patches on her bed.  Seeing that I could not really lie in the patches I went over to the couch for a more comfortable spot.   I’m not sure how long it was, but some time later I heard mommy enter the front door.   Mommy put down her stuff as usual and probably saw the mess I left on the bed.   She started calling but I didn’t really feel up to cuddles, but I knew mommy always helps me feel better.  I slowly got up, but immediately started feeling sick again.  I had a few blotches on my way to mommy.

I could hear mommy walking towards me and then I heard the all familiar clip sound that could only mean one thing.   The travel box.  I don’t really hate the box, but I always make sure mommy knows that I dislike it.   In order to try and avoid the box I hid under the couch.  I should have known mommy was smarter than me as I felt her hands gently taking me out from under the couch and placing me in the travel box.

The travel box. I don’t really hate the box, but I always make sure mommy knows that I dislike it. In order to try and avoid the box I hid under the couch. I should have known mommy was smarter than me as I felt her hands gently taking me out from under the couch and placing me in the travel box.

A few moments later we were all buckled in the car and on our way to what I assumed was the vet. When mommy took me out of the car, I could smell other animals. I was a bit unsure where I was but at least I had my mommy with me.

Mommy put my box down next to her and placed her hand inside the box to comfort me. When it was our turn to go to the consult room, mommy took me out of the travel box and explained to the vet that I ate the stuffing of a catnip toy. Mommy held me while the vet did a basic exam and told mommy that I was stable. Seeing that mommy also works at the vet, the Dr felt comfortable enough to send me home and asked mommy to monitor me overnight for further vomiting. He said that he didn’t want me to stress being in a hospital cage overnight without my mommy, which I really appreciated. Dr said that if I didn’t feel well mommy had to bring me back immediately even if it was in the middle of the night.

So, there I was, back into the travel box and being carried out by mommy, both on our way home. I spent the rest of my evening sleeping on the bed right next to mommy’s head. I know I had an upset tummy, but can you believe she took away all my food for the rest of the evening. Food is my life.

The next morning, I woke mommy up and asked her for some food.  At first, I thought mommy might not have heard me, so I repeated my request.  It seemed that she was blatantly ignoring me. When I bit her (not sure if it was on her nose or cheek) she told me I wasn’t getting any food as I had to go to work with her for an abdominal ultrasound to see if the catnip fluff was causing an obstruction.

I have heard mommy talk about ultrasounds before, but I’m not really sure what to expect as I can’t really see what they are doing.  I was still reminiscing about this when I felt mommy pick me up and realised it was travel box time again.

The drive to the vet went by fast and before I knew it, I got a whiff of the same smell mommy brings home with her every night from work.  We call it HOSPITAL SCENT.  I heard mommy talking to somebody as she lifted me out of the box and placed me in some sort of cage.   The cage also had that “hospital scent” that mommy has.  Mommy told the person she would check up on me later.

A short while later I heard the door to my cage open and somebody started talking to me in a gentle voice.  The person explained to me that he was going to pick me up and carry me to a table.  I was a bit uncertain as I don’t really like being carried but allowed him to pick me up as he also had the same “hospital scent” mommy had.  This had to mean he was a good person who could be trusted as mommy would not leave me with him if she didn’t trust him.

Once on the table I heard a ruffle of what I could only guess was equipment before he explained that he had to shave my belly for the abdominal ultrasound.  He said that the clipper would make a humming noise but that I shouldn’t be scared as it would not hurt.  I heard another person enter the room.  The footsteps were coming towards us.  The person asked if any assistance was needed before gently touching my leg to hold it.

I heard the clipper start and felt a tickling on my belly.  The tickling moved all around my belly.  When the clipper stopped the man wiped my belly, I would assume to remove the shaved hair and told me we were going to go for a walk again.   He gently picked me up and held me close to his chest while carefully carrying me to the ultrasound room.  I heard a door close behind us.

Another voice started talking and explained to me that they were going to have me lie on my back with my tummy facing upwards in order to scan me.  The voice then proceeded to explain that they were going to place a gel on my tummy before pressing a probe against my tummy.  (The gel helps the probe focus better and the he will be able to see a clear image on the screen in front of him.)  I wasn’t sure who this voice belonged to but could only guess that it was the Medicine specialist as I was told Dr Ryan was going to do my scan.

After they placed me on the bed, I felt a cold liquid being rubbed on my belly followed by a slight pressure.  I heard Dr Ryan again this time explaining what my intestines looked like.  I heard him say that I had no fluff in my tummy, but he could see something in my colon.  I wasn’t sure if that was good or bad, which made me a bit nervous.   A few min later my tummy was gently wiped and I was taken back to my cage.

I was comfortable on the blanket when I heard mommy’s footsteps followed by her voice.   Mommy asked me if I was ready to leave as she was taking me home during lunch so that I could spend the rest of my day with my siblings.   Mommy put my in my travel box and explained to me what Dr Ryan said.  I can’t believe I will be pooping fluff shortly.   One would think I was some sort of mythical creature like a unicorn to be able to poop fluff.

Well…  I guess it won’t make any difference to me as I won’t be able to see the fluffy poop.
